FINAL - NICK VAN DEN BERG 4-8 DARREN APPLETON. RACE TO EIGHT - WINNER BREAKS
SEMI-FINAL RESULTS: NICK VAN DEN BERG 8-2 SHANE VAN BOENING, DARREN APPLETON 8-6 MIKA IMMONEN
QUOTES: DARREN APPLETON: "It's unbelievable to win the World Pool Masters. It has been my goal to win a Matchroom event and to win this is like winning another world title.
"After the 10-ball victory I put a lot of expectation on myself and hopefully this will help me get in the World Cup of Pool and the Mosconi Cup. We all want to play in Matchroom tournaments and this hasn't done me any harm.
"This gives me a lot more belief that I can go on and keep winning titles. My target has been to get in the Mosconi Cup and winning this puts me in the mix, It is every pool players dream to play in the Mosconi Cup.
"It's great to win titles like the World Pool Masters but to play in the European team against USA would be something else.
"Not being picked for last year's Mosconi Cup is probably my biggest disappoinment in pool. I won the world 10-ball but it wasn't as if I'd not won anything else. To not get picked was disappointing but at the same time Europe have dominated the game for the last 18 months and obviously won in December.
"There are eight to ten players fighting for five spots in the Mosconi so someone was always going to be disappointed to miss out. If there was six players I would've been in the team.
"Matchroom pick the team they think was right and the only good thing about not being in it was it made me more determined to win this."
"I probably didn't play as well in the final as I did in the semi-final," added Appleton. "I didn't break as well as I had done and neither did Nick - he had three dry breaks in the final.
"Nick recently won the European Championship so I had him as the favourite and had broke the best to get to the final.
"He's a great guy and we're very good friends so we both tried to enjoy the final and was just a shame someone had to lose.
"He was on a great run so to beat him in the final is a dream come true especially with the three other players that I defeated."
10.40pm: It's all over. DARREN APPLETON WINS THE 2009 PARTYPOKER.NET WORLD POOL MASTERS. He clinches the title thanks to a 4-9 combination in the 12th rack and wins by an 8-4 margin.
10.37pm: Appleton moves to the hill after another breaking error from van den Berg - this time a dry break.
10.32pm: But fortune goes with van den Berg in the tenth rack. Appleton has an illegal break then he fails with a 2-7-9 combination. Van den Berg avoids scratching by millimetres after he potted the 6-ball and saw the cue ball hanging on the edge. Van den Berg wins the rack and the scoreboard now shows 6-4 in Appleton's favour.
10.23pm: Van den Berg is struggling with his break, after it served him so well throughout his previous three matches. The illegal break helps Appleton inch closer to the title. The Englishman is 6-3 ahead in this race to 8.
10.21pm: SPEAK TO US: "I love the live coverage," says Ted Lerner. "Great job gentlemen! Sounds like a fantastic final in Vegas. I only wish that I was there to see it live. Next year you should invite Manny Pacquiao to play. The guy can do anything! Have fun and keep the updates rolling. Cheers, Ted in Angeles City, Philippines." E-mail us at info@matchroom.com
10.20pm: Appleton has a dry break in the eighth and the rack doesn't last much longer as van den Berg closes the gap again to two thanks to a 1-9 carom.
10.13pm: A fluke from Appleton gives him a three-rack advantage after a fortunate 4-6 combination helps him.
10.07pm: Darren Appleton scratches to give van den Berg ball-in-hand. It quickly becomes 4-2.
10.02pm: SPEAK TO US: "It would have been better If I had said nothing, it's seems like i dared the devil," says Myracurfs.
10.00pm: Van den Berg has a chance after Appleton misses a red 3 into the centre pocket. But the Dutchman does not take the chance as he pots the 4-ball but then overscrews it so the cue ball rolls backwards straight into the pocket. With ball-in-hand, Appleton moves 4-1 in front.
9.58pm: Appleton now has a two-rack advantage after he comes up with one of the best breaks of the competition as four balls disappear off the table.
9.55pm: SPEAK TO US - Myracurfs: "Come on Nick.. take what's yours." Contact us at info@matchroom.com
9.52pm: Appleton produces a legal break and a fine long pot on the red 3 sets himself up to run out the rack. The Englishman leads 2-1.
9.45pm: Van den Berg has broke better than any other player throughout this tournament but comes up with a dry break now. Appleton misses a routine 6-ball but then makes up for it with a fine 6-8 combination. That sets him up to level the score at 1-1. It is also the first time in the competition he has not fallen 3-0 behind.
9.41pm: Appleton wins the lag but comes up with an illegal break as one ball is pocketed and only one other ball goes past the headstring. Van den Berg overcuts an attempt on the blue 2 but it ends up safe. Appleton also misses the same ball. But van den Berg does enough to win the rack and takes an early lead.
9.35pm: This is it. This is the final of the 2009 PartyPoker.net World Pool Masters. Nick van den Berg meets Darren Appleton.
9.12pm: It doesn't. Appleton, competing in his first World Pool Masters, reaches the final. The key moment comes when Immonen fails to sink the 5-ball into the side pocket. Appleton banks the same ball and that leads to him winning the match 8-6.
9.05pm: Appleton misses a straight-forward 2-ball and Immonen capitalises to win the rack but still is 7-6 behind. Appleton will be hoping that mistake does not come back to haunt him.
9.00pm: After losing the last two racks, Appleton then moves to the hill by taking the 12th rack.
8.48pm: Appleton's 8-7 victory over Ralf Souquet in the quarter-finals was arguably the best match of the tournament so far and this was becoming another classic. Appleton has a bad slick of luck as there is a bad contact when the cue ball hits the 4-ball. There is more good fortunate for Immonen when he narrowly avoids scratching when potting the 6-ball on his way to taking the rack. He now trails 6-5.
8.41pm: After a lengthy spell in his chair, Immonen finally gets another chance as Appleton makes an unexpected error when he missed a long 3-ball. And Immonen wins his first rack in seven.
8.37pm: It is a similar story in the next rack. Immonen has done little wrong but finds himself 6-3 down. Appleton two away from the final.
8.33pm: Mika Immonen can only sit and watch helplessly as Appleton is producing a near perfect effort. Appleton now has a two-rack advantage and leads 5-3.
8.30pm: Appleton leaves a tricky snooker for Immonen to try to get out of. The Iceman misses with his two-rail escape opportunity and Appleton, with ball-in-hand moves into the lead. These match has completely turned on its head.
8.23pm: Appleton runs out the sixth. That's three racks he has won on the bounce. It's 3-3 at the Riviera.
8.20pm: The deficit is reduced to one rack as Appleton wins his second after Immonen misses a jump shot on the 5-ball.
8.17pm: The fightback starts. Immonen has no luck with the break with no clear shot at the 1-ball. That forces him to attempt a bank shot but it misses and is then left on. Appleton does the rest for his first rack of the match.
8.14pm: It becomes 3-0 to Immonen as he downs two balls off the break and has a shot on the 2-ball. Amazingly, Appleton has now been 3-0 down in all three of his matches, although he won the first two and his fans will be hoping he can recover yet again.
8.11pm: Mika Immonen doubles his advantage by running out from the break in the second.
8.08pm: Mika Immonen meets Darren Appleton in the second semi-final to see who will meet van den Berg in the final. The first shot of the match sees Immonen almost make a golden break as the 9-ball is left hanging over the pocket. But it doesn't last much longer as a 3-9 combination gives the Finn the lead.
8.05pm: QUOTES - NICK VAN DEN BERG: "I was up 5-0 and ran out of position for 6-0 and I thought 'I hope he start putting racks together'.
"I just tried my best but when I was practising I was worried about my game. I tried to get some practise this morning at six but it was closed so practised at ten. But I didn't feel very good but I got some sleep after that.
"I didn't expect it to turn out that good but I got a bit lucky as he had two breaks that saw the cue ball kicked in. With the legal breaks I had a shot on the 1 or 2.
"We've been practising a lot in Holland with the cut break as we play that on the Euro Tour. Sometimes on the Euro Tour people ask me for tips on the cut break as I practise it so many times and I've figured out how to break pretty quickly.
"If I keep playing like this and keep it at that level then I will have a very good chance of winning this tournament. But it's a race to eight and you can get unlucky on the break but I'm feeling lucky."
8.00pm: On the hill, Nick delivers a perfect break that sees three balls drop and he completes another great run out for some Dutch delight in the desert! Van den Berg wins 8-2.
7.57pm: A great break from Van den Berg, a two-time Mosconi Cup star, as the 1 ball goes down and the 2 is a straight in. From there he runs out to get to the hill at 7-2.
7.54pm: Bad news... A dry break from the South Dakota Kid (although he asked to be billed as the Shooter in a shock nickname departure). Van den Berg pots the 1 and then plays a highly creative 2/9 combo to take the rack. 6-2
7.51pm: More good news for Shane fans as he clears from the break. 5-2
7.48pm: The 1 ball drops off the break but only one other ball chases past the headstring so Van Boening gets back to the table and pushes out.
Nick puts him back in but his kicked safety leaves the 2 ball on. The balls are out in the open but van den Berg plays a poor positional shot and has to kick. With the 4 ball just about on, Van Boening cuts it into the centre bag and completes the clearance to gain his first rack of the match. 5-1
7.45pm: SPEAK TO US: "He is ready for you Shane. Your turn!" says Courtney Kelly. Well it will be a memorable comeback if he does. But anything can happen in pool.
7.43pm: A break and run from Nick van den Berg makes his 5-0. The Dutchman has looked outstanding throughout this tournament in a very tough bracket beating Alex Pagulayan and Johnny Archer.
7.37pm: An illegal break means that Shane Van Boening gets back to the table but disaster strikes as he needs to play a delicate kick shot using the rest but fails to make any contact with the 2 ball, giving van den Berg ball in hand.
Not comfortable cueing off the rail, he missed the 4 ball but Shane could only play safe. His opponent then leaves him in a very tight snooker and van Boening plays the deliberate foul. Van den Berg then hooks him again with the balls clustered around the bottom left pocket. He fouls and the Dutchman plays the same shot. Another foul sees van den Berg take the rack on the three fouls rule and moves into a very handy 4-0 lead.
7.28pm: SPEAK TO US: "Troy, good morning. Shane all the way!" - Courtney Kelly. E-mail us at info@matchroom.com
7.22pm: A good break but no balls down as the 9 ball tracks ominously to the corner pocket.
Van Boening has the push option but kicks at the 1 ball, leaving his opponent a chance. Nick downs the 1 and with the table wide open and begging to be potted, he makes no mistakes to streak into a 3-0 lead.
7.15pm: The European Champion looks set in the second as he runs out from the break to increase his lead to 2-0 and put the pro-Shane crowd on the back foot.
7.10pm: The first semi-final is between Dutchman Nick van den Berg and American Shane van Boening.
Van Boening has the worst possible start to the match as he scratches on the break and with ball in hand, van den Berg gets his first rack of the semi final.
7.05pm SPEAK TO US: The predictions have been flying in - "Shane Is in for this win !!! Nick has been on the bench too long :-) just my opinion," Troy Sauers.
"Shane over Nick 8-4, Shane over Mika 8-3. Time will tell," - Courtney Kelly.
"Sorry to tell you Serge Das, but "The South Dakota Kid" is on a mission. He's bringing the championship home. The "USA" baby," - Moe.
"Shane is the man and will be victorious against all comers," - Brian Sherman.
