RESULT: SHANE VAN BOENING 8-5 TONY DRAGO, RALF SOUQUET 7-8 DARREN APPLETON, DENNIS ORCOLLO 4-8 MIKA IMMONEN (RACE TO EIGHT - WINNER BREAKS
5.55pm: SPEAK TO US: "If darren makes the final he will win it ," says Tony. The semi-final line-up is Nick van den Berg v Shane van Boening and Darren Appleton v Mika Immonen. So who's going to win? E-mail us info@matchroom.com
5.45pm: QUOTES: MIKA IMMONEN: "I think I had the best of it on the break and felt I only made one unforced error when I jumped up on the three-ball and scratched - horrible shot.
"But I played a solid match and he didn't have many chances. I wasn't nervous at all and felt comfortable.
"I've had a year of getting rid of ghosts and it would be nice to get this one as well (Immonen lost in the Masters final last year). But I'm just looking forward to the next match and don't want to get ahead of myself.
"I beat Darren pretty badly at the Turning Stone Classic in February and beat him either 9-1 or 9-2. But he's a very dangerous player so I have all the respect for his ability. He seems to be confident and comfortable so I will just have to keep him in the chair."
5.32pm: SPEAK TO US: Serge Das says: "OOPS!!! How could I be wrong? Of course, Nick will play Van Boening! Sorry! That will be even an easier task! :-) Yeah, i was there when the reporter called Tony the Torpedo. What a laugh that was!" E-mail us: info@matchroom.com
5.30pm: At a critical moment, Immonen makes a perfect break with a ball pocketed, two past the headstring and a straight shot on the 1 ball. From there he makes no mistakes and runs out to win 8-4 and secure a shot at Darren Appleton in the semi-final.
5.27pm: A ball on the break at last for Mika but he's forced to play a safe on the 2 ball. Orcollo reaches for his jump stick and gets out of trouble. They both have shots on the 2 ball before Dennis makes the error and leaves it on. From there Immonen clears the table to get to the hill at 7-4.
5.23pm: Yet another dry break saw Orcollo return to the table. He ran out of position when going from 5 to 6 but retrieved the situation with a nifty bank shot, then a fine pot on the 8 ball. He's still in there punching as the score goes to 6-4 in the Finns favour.
5.18pm: Nothing on the break for the Filipino and the 1 ball out in the open looked an attractive proposition for Immonen and he grasped the opportunity to go 6-3 ahead.
5.14pm: With the 1 pocketed and just the 3 ball past the headstring, it was an illegal break and Orcollo returned to the table. He gathered himself to run out and reduce Mika's lead to 3-5.
5.07pm: A dry break from Dennis allowed Immonen to make a 1/6 combination and he completed a comfortable run out to restore his three rack lead at 5-2.
5.00pm: SPEAK TO US: "Who's going to win the tournament? That's an easy one :-) says Serge Das. "I think Nick will win it this time!
"He's in great form as he won the Europeans 2 weeks ago for the first time, he will continue. His good stroke and will bring the title to Holland! But first he has to stop the Tornado! :-)"
Some brilliant points from Serge there. Well, apart from the fact Tony 'The Tornado' Drago was eliminated earlier in the day!!!!! Come on Serge! Pay attention!!!!
Or have you just decided to change Van Boening's nickname to The Tornado?
Speaking of which, that reminds us of a live television interview during the 2007 World Pool Championships.
Reporter (not me, honest): So Tony, they call you the Torpedo?
Drago: They don't call me the Torpedo!
Reporter: Oh!
E-mail us at info@matchroom.com for your views.
4.55pm: SPEAK TO US: "A big thanks to Matchroom for doing this live blog. Its awesome," says Tony.
4.52pm: Immonen made a ball on the break and chased the requisite two other balls up table. The 1 ball though was not pottable and his safety was not tight enough. Orcollo's safety was poor though and he left the yellow one next to the middle pocket and the Finn bagged it. Immonen missed the 3 and scratched into the centre bag and with ball in hand, the diminutive Pinoy played an easy 4/9 combo to reduce the deficit. 4-2.
4.50pm: Back to the ongoing action. Immonen and Orcollo share the next two racks as the Finn moves into a 4-1 lead.
4.47pm: QUOTES: RALF SOUQUET: "I started well and won the first three and had broke pretty well. Then in the next one I blew a good chance to go up 4-0 and missed an easy 1-ball.
"I was thinking of playing the one off the eight to open the problem three-eight but then chose not to do it. That was a beginner's mistake. He won three games in a row so took advantage of one stupid mistake.
"From then I made a ball all the time on the break but scratched twice and once had a tough lay out. Whenever I had a chance with the break I couldn't do anything.
"It's always disappointing to lose in the Masters, especially when you're playing well and feel like you've not done much wrong.
"I wanted to break the run of only winning in even years and I've never won the Masters in an odd year. I felt I had a good chance but it didn't work out. Hopefully I will be back next year."
4.44pm: A legal break from the Finn sees no balls drop and Orcollo takes his extension to fully appraise a tricky table. Orcollo took on the 1ball and cross banked it into the corner pocket. A neat jump shot on the 5 ball continued his visit but he made a bad miss on the 6 ball and left it out for Immonen. He ran out to increase his lead to 3-0.
4.43pm: The last quarter-final is Dennis Orcollo v Mika Immonen. Immonen storms into the lead and then confidently runs through the table to take a 2-0 lead.
4.42pm: SPEAK TO US: "Wow well done Darren proud of you my boy woooooooo," says Tony. "Unlucky Ralf. I need some nails and fingers thanks to Serge's prediction lol.
"Great job Matchroom. Darren showing himself well for his first event with you." Thanks Tony. Darren showed a lot of heart and character to win that one. Who's going to win the tournament then? E-mail us info@matchroom.com
4.26pm: QUOTES - DARREN APPLETON (who now plays Mika Immonen or Dennis Orcollo): "That was very nerve-wracking and that was the first time I'd played Ralf on tv. He has won the Masters five times so he is the man to beat in the field. This is a massive scalp for me and I was anxious to get over the line.
"I'm not frightened to play on tv but I'm pretty new to this. This is my first time in the Masters and I'm desperate to do well. I should've won easier as Ralf didn't get luck off the break but I made a couple of bad mistakes and was just lucky to get the opportunity. I'm pleased with the character I showed.
"I missed a couple of balls down the rail that I shouldn't have done and hit them thin, which is suicide on these tables.
"I'm emotional so when I sit in my chair I'm beating myself up but I've definitely improved mentally over the last three years. There's luck in the game and you just have to accept it - if you don't it will give you brain damage.
"This is one of my biggest wins of my career. After beating Wu Chia-ching in the 10-ball final this is my second biggest scalp at world level.
"I've got a pretty decent record against Mika and am up 4-1 and always seem to play well. I've played Dennis twice and lost twice but it would be nice to get a victory against him."
4.16pm: SPEAK TO US: "I dare not listen at hill hill no nails left, thanks Serge," says Tony. Well Tony you can stop biting your nails now as Darren has done it. He plays either Dennis Orcollo or Mika Immonen in the next round.
4.15pm: Souquet misses the 2-ball and Appleton has ball-in-hand. He downs the 2-ball and makes a successful 3-9 combination. Appleton had not been in the lead throughout the match but moves in front for the only time that matters. Appleton wins a classic 8-7. Pure drama and excitement here at the Riviera.
4.14pm: SPEAK TO US: "I will let you know how much i've won with Euromillions next week! :-)," says Serge Das. Er... thanks Serge! info@matchroom.com
4.13pm: Appleton misses the 2-ball but so does Souquet. The German gets lucky as it safe. But a fine safety from Appleton parks the cue-ball tight behind the 9-ball.
4.12pm: Souquet clips the 1-ball and keeps his hopes alive. Appleton will have to work his way through the colours to clinch victory.
4.11pm: SPEAK TO US: "This is exciting stuff! Unlucky scratch..." says Serge Das. info@matchroom.com
4.10pm: Appleton breaks and leaves Souquet a tough safety. The German has to be careful as a potential 1-9 combination is waiting.
4.09pm: He holds his nerve as mystic Serge proves spot on. Hill hill. So Serge if you could e-mail us the winning numbers in the next EuroMillions lottery then that will be greatly appreciated!
4.08pm: Appleton's prayers are answered as he gets a massive slice of luck. Souquet's break sees the cue ball kicked in by the eight-ball. Appleton springs up out of his seat.
4.07pm: As expected, Darren's mistake costs him the 13th rack. Souquet on the hill 7-6 ahead. Appleton is praying for another chance.
4.06pm: SPEAK TO US: "Well, i guess i know the guy's too good... :-) Tony, are you still ok?" asks a worried Serge Das. Info@matchroom.com
4.05pm: Souquet doesn't cover the four-ball and Appleton pots it. But it all goes wrong for the Englishman with a shocking effort on the green six. He has his head in hands praying to get back to the table again.
4.03pm: But he runs out of position and has to play safe. Cue ball tight on the bottom rail. The four-ball tight on the top rail.
4.00pm: Appleton makes a legal break and is eyeing up taking the lead for the first time.
3.58pm: A fine long pot from Appleton sees him back in business. He pots the remaining balls and it is now 6-6. Serge's prediction of hill-hill looks a decent shout at the moment!
3.56pm: SPEAK TO US: "Don't scratch on the break now!" says Serge Das. E-mail us info@matchroom.com
3.55pm: Souquet sends two balls down off the break and another goes past the headstring for a legal break. But the 9-ball gets in the way of a clear shot at the 2-ball. Souquet decides to play a kick shot but will be disappointed with safety attempt.
3.53pm: Appleton tries to roll the 4-ball down the rail but leaves it hanging over the corner pocket. Souquet does the rest in that rack and moves in front again. 6-5 to the German. Appleton has still not been in front in the match.
3.47pm: SPEAK TO US: "Don't say hill hill. My nerves are on edge as it is lol," says a nervous Tony. E-mail us info@matchroom.com
3.45pm: Now it's Souquet's turn to scratch on the break. Appleton, with ball-in-hand, ties it up again at 5-5. High-quality encounter this one and one mistake could put one of these two out.
3.43pm: Appleton, using the cut break, watches as two balls disappear into the side pocket. But the cue ball then follows them in. Souquet instantly pounces with a 2-9 combination. He leads 5-4.
3.40pm: Souquet has no luck on the break. Appleton is back at the table and levels it up at 4-4.
3.37pm: SPEAK TO US: "Appleton has got point to prove after the Hatch loss so all watch out," says Pat. E-mail us info@matchroom.com
3.35pm: Souquet gets the jump stick out and is succesful. That leads to him winning the seventh to regain the lead at 4-3.
3.33pm: SPEAK TO US: "It will be a close call. I think Ralf will manage it... after hill-hill," says Serge Das. Sound like we're in line for some nerve-shredding excitement then! Do you agree with Serge? What do you think? E-mail us info@matchroom.com
3.31pm: The 9-ball is hovering suspiciously near the pocket from the early stages of the seventh rack. Both players have attempts at it but it's a challenge as the majority of the other balls are at the opposite end of the table. Appleton clips the 9-ball but it nudges into the only other ball near it - the seven ball - and it stays out.
3.26pm: A 2-9 carom from Appleton sees him win his third rack in a row.
3.23pm: Appleton claims the second. He looks back in stroke in this, the first time he has played in the Masters.
3.20pm: SPEAK TO US: "If Darren gets the breaks i fancy him to win 8-6. And Orcollo to win 8-5 (over Mika Immonen)," says Tony. What do you think? E-mail us: info@matchroom.com
3.18pm: There is a safety exchange at the start of the third before Appleton gets a chance. A 1-6 combination and a 3-8 combination help before he pots a fine 9-ball. Is this the start of another fightback?
3.15pm: Souquet moves 3-0 ahead. But no need to panic for Appleton just yet as he trailed 3-0 against Raj Hundal in the first round before winning 8-3.
3.11pm: Souquet fails with a jump shot on the 1-ball in the second rack but Appleton later misses an opportunity on the same ball when he tries to roll it along the side rail. A 3-9 combination from Souquet makes it 2-0.
3.07pm: The second match of the afternoon sees The Kaiser Ralf Souquet up against Dynamite Darren Appleton. Souquet, who thrashed Ruslan Chinakhov 8-1 in the first round in the biggest winning margin of the opening round, wins the first rack.
3.04pm: SPEAK TO US: "Good luck Darren," says Tony. He's got a tough task as he plays Ralf Souquet. Starts shortly. Lets have some predictions on this match. Who's going to be in the semi-finals? E-mail us at info@matchroom.com An honorable mention to Courtney, Maurice and Serge. Keep the messages coming!
3.02pm: SPEAK TO US: "The setup and arena looks awesome in the pictures well done Matchroom," says Tony. Thanks Tony. It's been a great event. E-mail us at info@matchroom.com
2.57pm: QUOTES - SHANE VAN BOENING: "I played great and only made one mistake. But I've been practising hard in the practise room so I'm getting in stroke.
"I haven't played Nick van den Berg but he won that tournament in Europe (European Championship) so is playing well. Tony was getting a lot of rolls off the break but he made a couple of mistakes and that was my turnaround."
2.53pm: QUOTES - TONY DRAGO: "I felt better than yesterday and we both played ok. I had a bit of bad luck in the ninth game when I made the four with a good shot but hooked myself behind the lip.
"I then made a mistake to go 7-5 down and after that he broke and ran out. If I had gone 5-4 ahead I think I would've won the match. I've nothing against Shane but hopefully a European can win it.
"Shane is a good player and he will take some stopping. But I think he will find it tough against Nick as he has been breaking very well."
2.48pm: Van Boening's break in the next rack leaves him with a good chance of winning the match. He does just that and books his spot in the semi-finals.
2.46pm: Drago wins the 11th frame but in the 12th scratches during a shot on the 2-ball. Drago looks furious and knows that mistake could put him out of the competition. Van Boening moves to the hill and is one rack from the semis.
2.45pm: SPEAK TO US: "SVB all the way," says Courtney Kelly. E-mail us your thoughts at info@matchroom.com
2.43pm: Van Boening restores his two-rack lead. He needs two more to set up a semi-final clash with Holland's Nick van den Berg. 6-4 to Van Boening.
2.40pm: SPEAK TO US: "Come on Mr Drago," says Tony. E-mail us at info@matchroom.com
2.39pm: The man from Malta looks like winning his third rack in a row but nearly scratches with the cue ball close to falling into the side pocket. He has to play safe but it is a disappointing effort and Van Boening has another chance. He take sit. 5-4 to the American.
2.36pm: Drago runs out the next and we're level again at 4-4.
2.30pm: Van Boening has to push out after the break and that leads to a top quality safety battle with every shot applauded by a large crowd at The Riviera. It ends when Van Boening attempts a jump shot on the 2-ball but he misses and leaves it on. Drago races through the balls and now only trails by one.
2.21pm: A dry break gives Tony Drago a shot at the 1-ball. But he then has to play safe and misjudges it. That slip gives Van Boening another chance and he extends his advantage to two racks.
2.17pm: The American blasts the break and everything is out in the open and looking inviting. Not surprisingly, Van Boening runs out the rack and takes the lead for the first time.
2.13pm: Van Boening breaks and runs out in the fourth rack to tie the scores at 2-2.
2.10pm: An illegal break from Drago brings Van Boening to the table for the first time. He later pots the 9-ball to gain his first rack of the match.
2.05pm: The first match of the last day is between Shane Van Boening and Tony Drago.
Drago, regarded as the fastest player in the world, storms into an early lead as Van Boening is forced to sit in his chair for the opening two racks for a faultless opening from Drago.
