RESULTS: DENNIS ORCOLLO 8-3 TYLER EDEY, MIKA IMMONEN 8-7 FU JIAN-BO, NICK VAN DEN BERG 8-5 JOHNNY ARCHER
10.48pm: QUOTES - NICK VAN DEN BERG: "I last played in the World Pool Masters two years ago and finished third when I got beaten by Thomas Engert. I was happy to get third but this time I want to win it.
"Lately I'm playing like I have nothing to lose and before I was very happy with every win but didn't care about winning a tournament.
"I'm delighted I won this match but it wasn't that good a match. I was up 3-1 and had a couple of chances to do more but I didn't. He kept scratching on the break so I got my chances. The crucial point was when he scratched at 4-4.
"At 7-5 I got lucky with that 9-ball but sometimes you need some luck to win.
"I now play Tony Drago, who I know very well, or Shane van Boening and I've never played him before."
10.42pm: A good break and van den Berg eyes up a potential match-winning 2-9 combination. He gets it wrong but the 9-ball clips the 3-ball and the 9-ball slowly falls into the side pocket. Van den Berg punches the air as he secures an 8-5 victory and becomes the first man into the semi-finals.
10.37pm: Van den Berg leaves a long pot on at the 2-ball but Archer later misjudges a safety attempt and leaves the 5-ball out in the open. Archer is furious with himself and his mood doesn't lighten as Van den Berg moves to the hill at 7-5.
10.26pm: An illegal break from Archer hands the initiative back to van den Berg and he takes the lead for the fifth time.
10.23pm: The fans at the Riviera are being treated to another high quality encounter and Archer refuses to give up as it levels the match at 5-5.
10.15pm: Van den Berg restored his lead in the ninth rack thanks to a 3-9 combination.
10.10pm: Archer had not won two successive racks but that run ended in the eighth as van den Berg attempted a kick shot on the 2-ball but scratched to give Archer ball-in-hand.
10.04pm: Dutchman van den Berg sinks two balls off the break but later leaves the three ball on. Archer sinks it and then finishes off the rack for 4-3.
9.53pm: Archer, who has not been in front yet in this match, scratches in the sixth rack and van den Berg moves two racks ahead for the third time in the match.
9.44pm: Van den Berg makes an illegal break and later leaves the 4-ball on. That starts Archer off and it is now 3-2.
9.37pm: Arches leaves the 2-ball tight on the rail but it does not matter as van den Berg pots it and later sinks a 6-9 combination to restore his two-rack advantage.
9.30pm: Van den Berg scratches when potting a ball and that gives Archer a chance, which he takes but now trails 2-1.
9.25pm: The last match of the second day was the first quarter-final between Nick van den Berg and Johnny Archer. Van den Berg makes a 5-9 combination to take the lead and then doubles his advantage minutes later.
9.15pm: QUOTES: MIKA IMMONEN: "It was very tough and very nerve wracking. I thought I had a pretty good start as I was 3-0 up but then I deserted my own game plan and he sneaked back into the game.
"I had to dig deep and he got a golden nine so the rolls were going his way. I had to fight my back into the game but I stuck in there and made some pretty intense runouts - my heart was really pounding.
"It was fantastic to beat him and I owed him a beating since he beat me in the World Cup of Pool final. I thought about that before and I had a score to settle with him. He is technically a very sound player but my pool experience helped me through some really tricky racks. I'm really surprised he missed that 5-6 combination and we both made a mistake in the final rack.
"I thought I was going out, especially when he bumped into the five off the three to make the combination easier but he played a bad shape on the combination and the fortune went my way."
9.06pm: Fu misses a tough 5-6 combination and that will be the last shot he makes in the 2009 PartyPoker.net World Pool Masters. Immonen holds his nerve to scrape an 8-7 victory and book his spot in the quarter-finals.
9.01pm: It's the best match of the competiton by some distance as Fu jumps on an illegal break by Immonen to make it the first hill-hill match of the tournament.
8.59pm: It's a legal break from Immonen and he holds his nerve to move to the hill. 7-6 Immonen.
8.57pm: Fu is unsuccessful with a shot at the 1-ball. Immonen does the rest and we're all square again.
8.50pm: Fu breaks and runs out in the 11th. Although he gets lucky as the 9-ball rattles around in the jaws of the pocket before finally dropping.
8.44pm: Immonen's illegal break leads to Fu leaving a tight safety. Immonen makes a great attempt to get out of it as he swerves round two balls and hits the desired 1-ball. But it doesn't matter as he leaves the 1-ball on and Fu makes it level again. It's an epic!
8.38pm: From a golden break to a dry break from Fu. This match was already the closest of the tournament so far and Immonen reclaimed the lead with a faultless display of potting.
8.35pm: Immonen comes up with a dry break in the seventh and Fu does the rest for 4-3. Seconds later it is 4-4 as he makes a golden break as the 9-ball is bumped into the pocket.
8.31pm: Immonen restores his two-rack advantage by taking the sixth and is now half way to the magic eight figure.
8.27pm: With the 2-ball in the way of the 1-ball from the break, it gives Fu Jian bo a chance and he gains his first rack of the match. He then wins his second with Immonen stuck sitting down.
8.21pm: MIka Immonen immediately stamps his authority on this match by racing into a 3-0 lead. He makes a 2-9 combination in the first, breaks and runs out in the second and makes a 3-9 combination in the third.
8.15pm: The third match is between Mika Immonen and Fu Jian bo. These two were two of the four players involved in the 2007 World Cup of Pool final when China defeated Finland.
8.07pm: QUOTES - DENNIS ORCOLLO: "I started very well and I shot good so that gave me confidence. I'm confident but we will see see what happens because there's a lot of top players here.
"But I will continue with my game and hopeful I get lucky but at the same time I'm feeling good so hopefully I can get to the final.
"I'm planning to be a champion and win more big tournaments."
7.58pm: An illegal break from Edey proves costly and Dennis Orcollo, as many people had expected, comfortably reaches the next round.
7.51pm: Edey misses the blue 2 in the tenth but gets fortunate as the cue ball ends up safe. Orcollo fails to connect with the same ball and with ball-in-hand Edey makes it 7-3.
7.48pm: Edey quickly loses control of the table in the ninth and Orcollo moves to the hill.
7.44pm: With no luck on the break, Edey gets a chance and he capitalises to reduce the deficit to 6-2 but still has an uphill task.
7.37pm: Orcollo fouls and Edey leaves a tight safety. But Orcollo makes a superb escape shot and leaves a tight safety of his own. That draws a mistake from Edey as he misses his intended blue 2 target. With ball-in-hand Orcollo does the rest and is closing in on a spot in the quarter-finals.
7.30pm: It is all one-way traffic and Edey is spending a lot of time in his chair. Even an illegal break from Orcollo doesn't change the state of the match. Edey can't capitalise and Orcollo moves 5-1 ahead.
7.27pm: Dennis Orcollo shows his class by comfortably moving through the next two racks to gain a 4-1 lead.
7.18pm: Tyler Edey pulls things level by winning the second rack but Orcollo soon regains the lead by claiming the next.
7.14pm: Edey won the lag and nearly took an instant lead with a golden break but the 9-ball is left near the corner pocket. Both players miss a 2-9 combination but Orcollo eventually takes the lead.
7.10pm: The third session starts with Dennis Orcollo taking on Tyler Edey. The Canadian comes in as a last-minute replacement for Alain Martel, who was denied a visa.
