RESULTS: ALEX PAGULAYAN 2-8 NICK VAN DEN BERG, JOHNNY ARCHER 8-2 IMRAN MAJID, SHANE VAN BOENING 8-2 YU RAM CHA
10.20pm: QUOTES - SHANE VAN BOENING: "I wasn't really nervous playing a woman as you have to just treat everyone as your opponent and just play your own game. I played alright but the table was a little confusing as it slides a lot and you can't control the cue ball but once I work it out I will be ok.
"It would mean a lot to me and would be another title in my career and I just love to play. I've been playing a lot of money games with Alex Pagulayan trying to get warmed up so I just have to try my best."
10.07pm: That miss on the 9-ball proves to be Yu Ram's last shot in the 2009 PartyPoker.net World Pool Masters. Van Boening, although nowhere near his best, does enough to win 8-2 and comfortably moves into the last eight.
10.04pm: There was drama in the ninth rack. Van Boening missed the black eight and was left shaking his head at the miss. However, Yu Ram leaves the 9-ball hanging over the corner pocket. She goes back in her seat and looks upset as Van Boening moves to the hill at 7-2.
9.57pm: It's an unconvincing performance from Van Boening but still an effective one. He misses an attempted pot at the pink 4 but the cue ball then bumps into the same ball to send it into the pocket. That helps him win another rack. It's now 6-2.
9.53pm: Van Boening moves three racks ahead for the first time in the match for what should be a decisive 5-2 lead. He has a stroke of fortune as a push out comes up good for him and Yu Ram has a lot of work to do.
9.46pm: Yu Ram hits a fine break at the start of the sixth but then a misjudged safety on the blue two leaves it out in the open. The error causes Yu to slam her cue down to the floor in frustration. Van Boening punishes the mistake and the lead is restored to two racks.
9.40pm: A 1-3 carom from Van Boening looks to set him up for another rack but he then misses a straight-forward shot on the 2-ball. Yu Ram pulls it back to 3-2 and Van Boening looks nervous.
9.33pm: Yu Ram flukes a snooker but luck is then with Van Boening. He plays a two-rail kick shot as the 3-ball crashes into the 5-ball, which bumps into the 9-ball and that drifts slowly into the side pocket. The American now leads 3-1.
9.27pm: Van Boening misses with a bank attempt on the 1-ball but it does not matter as Yu Ram scratches into the side pocket with her next shot. With ball-in-hand, Van Boening moves into the lead for the first time. He hasn't been at his best but is 2-1 in front.
9.24pm: Yu Ram puts too much top spin on her break and watches helplessly as the ball falls into the top pocket. Van Boening does enough to make it 1-1.
9.20pm: The last match of the opening day is between Shane van Boening and Yu Ram Cha, the only female in the competition. An illegal break from van Boening proves costly as Yu Ram Cha wins her first ever rack in the PartyPoker.net World Pool Masters.
9.16pm: QUOTES: JOHNNY ARCHER - "That was a good performance and I was very happy with the way I played. I made some good shots and a couple of racks were pretty easy but there was consistency which has been lacking so maybe I'm on my way back.
"Any time Mosconi Cup members play each other there will be a little bit of extra spark. I don't have anything against Imran Majid but to beat anyone from the Mosconi Cup gives you an extra boost.
"I broke the balls well, made my key shots and played pretty smart. That's the way I like to play and it makes me happy to do so. It would mean everything to me to win it. You want to win any tough competition, any Matchroom event, any international event. I've never won the World Pool Masters and that would be something to put in my trophy cabinet.
"It will probably be Mosconi Cup players all the way but the thing about pool is when you're at the table it doesn't matter who you're playing against. If you play well, control the table and put pressure on the next guy then everybody folds."
QUOTES: IMRAN MAJID: "Johnny played really well and he deserved to win."
9.06pm: Archer nearly wraps it up as the 9-ball careers towards the pocket off the break but is left hanging on the edge. The 3-9 combination wraps things up and he wins 8-2.
9.03pm: Archer smashes the break and gets his reward with a shot on the 1-ball. Archer's not in trouble and cruises through the ninth rack. He is now on the hill at 7-2 and one rack away from a quarter-final tie with Nick van den Berg.
9.00pm: It's four racks in a row from Archer who now leads 6-2. Majid has to sit, wait and hope.
8.53pm: A 3-9 combination from Archer extends his lead to 5-2.
8.48pm: An unforced error from Majid who fails to see the cue ball or the target ball hit any rail. Archer has ball-in-hand and restores his two-rack lead.
8.44pm: Archer had to sit down for two racks but is back at the table and back in the lead 3-2 to the Scorpion.
8.42pm: SPEAK TO US: Sid Aberin is the first to stick his neck on the line with some bold predictions. "I think both Immonen and Souquet will experience upsets in round 1. Van Boening and Orcollo in the finals, 8-4 or 8-5 for the Filipino," says Super Sid. Immonen plays Fu Jian Bo and Souquet is up against Ruslan Chinakhov. So what do you think? Do you agree with Sid? 8.39pm: Majid makes it level at 2-2 but comes up with a dry break at the start of the fifth.
8.36pm: Archer pushes out but leaves a potential jump shot on the 1-ball. Majid makes it and gets his first rack on the board.
8.28pm: A dry break from Majid proves costly as Archer runs through the opener and keeps Majid in his chair for the second for a very quick 2-0 lead.
8.25pm: Second match is between Johnny Archer and Imran Majid. They've got a bit of history as Archer accused Majid of sharking him during a heated Mosconi Cup encounter in 2006. Could get lively!
8.22pm: SPEAK TO US - MatchroomPool.com friend Tony says: "Well done Nick van den Berg. Unlucky Alex and good luck to rest of guys playing tonight. My bed time now its 4.15am lol ." Going to bed at only 4.15am! Come on Tony, you can stay up for another two matches! Comments: info@matchroom.com
8.16pm: QUOTES - NICK VAN DEN BERG: "I played good and have felt good in the last few weeks. I kept up my performance from the European Championships and was delighted with the win.
"I still made a few mistakes and gave him some chances to get into it but a crucial point came at 2-1 and had kicks and safeties. But I managed to kick one in to make it 3-1. I figured out the break very quickly and that's one of the strongest parts of my game. I don't care who I play in the next round as they're both world class players but everyone can win in a race to eight.
"In previous years I was just happy to win the first match but now I want to win the next three as well."
8.10pm: SPEAK TO US - "The lion has been tamed by the sound of it," says Tony. Spot on Tony. A very impressive performance from the European Champion, who now meets either Johnny Archer or Imran Majid in the quarter-finals. Your thoughts to info@matchroom.com
8.07pm: A 7-8 combination sets up van den Berg and he then finishes the job off. Van den Berg advances with an 8-2 victory.
8.05pm: Pagulayan tries to cut in the 2-ball but misjudges it, leaves it on and slumps back to his seat knowing he may not get another shot in this year's World Pool Masters.
8.04pm: Van den Berg moves to the hill. Is the defending champion heading for an early exit?
8.01pm: SPEAK TO US - First comment of the day comes from Tony. "I would just like to say a big thanks for describing how the frames are going one by one. Awesome!" Cheers Tony. Get your name on here by sending your comments and thoughts to info@matchroom.com
7.59pm: Safety battle. Tight and tense. Pagulayan reaches for the jump cue for the first time and downs the 4-ball ball but gets no luck for the position on the 5-ball
7.55pm: The first illegal break of the competition as only two balls are either pocketed or go past the head string brings van den Berg back to the table.
7.52pm: A rare van den Berg error gives Pagulayan a long overdue sniff of a chance. He takes it but still trails by six racks to two.
7.44pm: The praise keeps coming for van den Berg as he takes the seventh rack and Wych describes the Dutchman's performance as one of the best he has ever seen from him. 6-1.
7.35pm: It's becoming a rout as Pagulayan is glued to his seat although he hasn't done much wrong. But it's a near flawless effort from Van den Berg who, according to commentator Jim Wych, has Pagulayan 'in a world of pain!' 5-1.
7.31pm: Van den Berg misses the 5-ball but Pagulayan leaves it on and van den Berg is halfway towards the magic total of eight. 4-1.
7.28pm: Pagulayan plays a kick shot but then scratches. Van den Berg has ball-in-hand and looks to inflict more punishment.
7.26pm: Van den Berg seems to have control of the break. And it's another good one but he misses the 2-ball although it's left safe.
7.25pm: It's standing room only at the Riviera and the capacity crowd are being treated to a fine exhibition from van den Berg. 3-1.
7.21pm: A scrappy start to the fourth rack. Pagulayan banks the blue 2 then lays a tough safety for van den Berg. But he makes it look easy with a fine shot on the 3-ball.
7.14pm: Pagulayan makes a 3-9 combination and wins his first rack of the match.
7.13pm: With no path to the 1-ball it looks like van den Berg will soon be sitting down. But he gets out of trouble with a kick shot to down the 1-ball and he's back in business. But wait... he misses the blue 2 and Pagulayan finally gets to the table.
7.11pm: It's a legal break from van den Berg and the balls are out in the open. He does the rest and it's 2-0. Pagulayan sits there frustrated and unable to do anything at the moment.
7.08pm: Nick van den Berg, who won the European title recently, won the lag and forces defending champion Alex Pagulayan to stay in his seat. 1-0 to the Dutchman.
