RESULT: ENGLAND 8-4 MALAYSIA, PHILIPPINES A 8-5 THAILAND

QUOTES: DENNIS ORCOLLO (PHILIPPINES): "We needed to do everything right but we made a few mistakes and got nervous. But Ronnie said to me to not think about the mistakes and just win this match."

9.05pm: Orcollo, to the delight of the home support, pots the final 9-ball and Philippines A join the B side in the next round.

9pm: Philippines have to push out at the start of the break in the 13th rack and Thailand reject the opportunity. Orcollo looks to have made the 1-ball safe but very nearly scratched. Luckily for him it stays out of the pocket. Orcollo then produces a fine shot to bank the 2-ball.

8.57pm: The home crowd have found their voice again as for the second rack running the Thailand pairing were rooted in their seats. Philippines move to the hill and one rack away from the next round.

8.50pm: A powerful break from Alcano gives Philippines the initiative in the 11th rack and the same player holds his nerve to put Philippines back in front for the first time since rack seven.

8.43pm: Philippines A get a stroke of luck that could prove to be a turning point when Alcano flukes a 1-ball and that leads to them taking a tense rack. You can tell the players and crowd are nervous, but full credit to Thailand, who had never won a match in the competition before but are still in with a great opportunity of a huge upset.

8.34pm: The ninth rack is the most dramatic of the match as Kanjanasri scratches, Orcollo fouls, Phoochalam misses the pink 4 and then Orcollo later misses on the 6-ball. Thailand eventually take the rack and have moved into a shock lead, for the first time in the match.

8.25pm: Alcano misses the 5-ball in the next and from looking comfortable at 3-0 Philippines A are now pegged back with the score tied at 4-4.

8.21pm: Seconds later the score moves on to 4-3 as Kanjanasri comes up with a golden break, only the second of the tournament.

8.20pm: Alcano scratches in the sixth rack and that error is punished as Thailand pull one back.

8.15pm: Orcollo enjoys a fine fifth rack as he pots a tricky looking 5-ball that Phoochalam had left and then wins the rack for his country after his partner had underhit a shot. 4-1 to Philippines A.

8.06pm: Thailand have control of the table but lose the cue ball going from the 7-ball to the 8-ball and Phoochalam has to play safe. However, Alcano misses with the long pot on the 8-ball and Thailand claim their first rack.

7.57pm: Philippines B, consisting of Efren Reyes and Francisco Bustamante, moved into the last 16 yesterday by beating Qatar 8-1 and Philippines A are hoping to join them in the next phase. They take another step closer by winning the third rack for a 3-0 lead.

7.53pm: The advantage is soon doubled as Philippines run out the second rack with Alcano making it 2-0.

7.50pm: Thailand have an excellent chance to win the opening rack after Orcollo leaves the 7-ball hanging over the pocket, although the 8-ball is blocking a clean shot at it. However, Kanjanasri swerves round the 8-ball to pot the 7-ball but his team-mate Phoochalam wastes his good work by missing the 8-ball with his next shot. Philippines A, cheered on by a capacity crowd, move 1-0 ahead.

7.45pm: The last match of the second day is between Thailand's team of Nitiwat Kanjanasri and Surathep Phoochalam and the Philippines A outfit of Ronnie Alcano and Dennis Orcollo.

QUOTES: IMRAN MAJID (ENGLAND, JOKING ABOUT THE 9-BALL HE MISSED IN RACK SIX): "I didn't get good position from Darren so it was a tough shot. All the 9s I left him were easy so it's Darren's fault!

DARREN APPLETON (ENGLAND, JOKINGLY RESPONDING): "If I was playing with you John (McDonald, event MC) and you missed that shot I would've been disappointed. A player of his standard shouldn't miss that shot!"

DARREN APPLETON (MORE SERIOUSLY): "In 2007 I had to qualify for the World Pool Championships in the Philippines and unfortunately didn't do so, but then I came here the next year and won the World 10-Ball Championships so I love coming here.

"Something like this event you have the best players in the world and when you play in the Philippines you have to bring your best play."

7.29pm: Bin Amir cannot get out of the trap, although he makes a very good effort with a three-rail attempted escape. That foul gives England ball-in-hand and they do the rest from there. England were not at their best and maybe made it tougher than it could have been but they won and are in the next round, which will be the only thing that concerns them. FINAL SCORE: ENGLAND 8-4 MALAYSIA.

7.25pm: England will have to wait a bit longer for the victory as Appleton comes up with an illegal break as three balls are not pocketed or go past the headstring. But he soon makes amends with a fine safety that leaves the cue ball behind three different balls - the 5, 7 and 9 as he aims to hit the 4-ball.

7.20pm: Lee Poh Soon makes another error in the 11th when he misses the green 5 and to make things worse then sees the cue ball disappear into the pocket. With ball-in-hand, England make it 7-4 and are on the hill, one rack from victory.

7.15pm: From 5-0 ahead, this looked to be an easy match for England. But they have certainly taken their foot off the pedal in the latter frames. Appleton misses the pink 4 and leaves it hanging over the pocket.  Malaysia accept the gift and make it 6-4 and will break in the next. Majid and Appleton are beginning to look a bit nervous.

7.13pm: England gain control of the table early in the eighth rack and regain their momentum by winning the ninth. They are now two racks away from a meeting with Spain.

7.06pm: England can only sit and watch in the eighth as Malaysia break and run out. They had this game in their grasp and will be hoping two unforced errors in successive racks do not come back to haunt them.

6.58pm: Majid misses the 5-ball in the sixth and that proves costly a 7-9 combination from the Malaysians makes it 5-2

6.55pm: Bin Amir scratches in the next but Majid leaves the 9-ball. Malaysia pocket it to avoid a whitewash but still trail 5-1.

6.51pm: Malaysia have a rare chance as there are only three balls left on the table when England make a mistake. Bin Amir sets up an unmissable 8-9 combination which Lee Poh Soon, er, then misses. Easily the worst shot we have seen in the whole tournament. England take advantage and make it 5-0.

6.45pm: It soon becomes 4-0 and it is looking easy for England, the runners-up in 2008.

6.43pm: England break and run out for a 3-0 lead. We had a whitewash in the last match when Germany thrashed Hong Kong 8-0 and we could be witnessing something similar here.

6.40pm: Malaysia get to the table in the second rack but Ibrahim Bin Amir's attempt on the 6-ball rattles around in the jaws of the pocket but does not drop. England take full advantage to double their lead.

6.37pm: England make a great start as they storm through the opening rack.

6.35pm: The next match is the encounter between England and Malaysia. England's team consists of Darren Appleton and Imran Majid, while Ibrahim Bin Amir and Lee Poh Soon are playing for Malaysia.
