RESULTS: MALTA 7-8 USA, PHILIPPINES B 8-3 QATAR

8.32pm: Qatar have won two racks in a row but when Hussain scratches that looks to be the end of their involvement in the tournament. And it is. FINAL SCORE: PHILIPPINES B 8-3 QATAR.

8.25pm: After a good break, Qatar run out the rest of the rack and the scoreline ticks over to 7-3.

8.21pm: Qatar enjoy some game time and manage to win their second rack. It probably won't change the outcome but at least gives a bit more respectability to the scoreline.

8.13pm: An illegal break by Reyes gives Qatar a chance in the ninth but a loose shot on the 1-ball from Ali Bin Ali leads to a lengthy safety battle.

8.11pm: The gulf in class is clearly evident and Philippines are crusing into the last 16. They run out the eighth rack and the scoreboard shows 7-1

8.06pm: Hussain's two-rail escape attempt from a Reyes safety proves unsuccessful and with ball-in-hand, Philippines look set to extend their lead further, which they do.

8pm: Bustamante unintentionally pots the 1-ball with a kick-shot at the start of the seventh and that forces Reyes to use the jump cue to try for the 2-ball. It stays out but once again Qatar cannot capitalise.

7.55pm: Both Reyes and Bustamante appear to be relaxed and enjoying themselves. They have every reason to be as they win their fifth rack in a row and lead 5-1.

7.52pm: Bustamante uses a power break and nearly claims a golden break but the 9-ball just stays out.

7.50pm: Even a dry break by Reyes at the start of the fifth cannot shift the momentum of the match. Qatar, who are beginning to look outclassed, hand over possession of the table cheaply and Bustamante pockets the 9-ball for 4-1.

7.46pm: The match is beginning to pan out as expected as Philippines move two ahead. Qatar already seem to have a mountain to climb, but anything can happen in 9-ball pool.

7.43pm: Philippines take advantage of Ali Bin Ali's error and lead 2-1. They play safe at the start of the fourth but quickly regain control of the table.

7.40pm: A missed kick-shot on the 2-ball by Reyes brings Qatar to the table but not for long as Ali Bin Ali scratches off an attempted kick-shot of his own.

7.37pm: Qatar have a golden opportunity to move 2-0 ahead but Ali Bin Ali, arguably playing in the biggest match of his career, misses the 9-ball. Philippines take advantage and the scores are tied.

7.34pm:  It's a shaky start from the Philippines B team as both players have fouled and then, in the second rack, Bustamante leaves Reyes hooked.

7.30pm: Hussain misses a straight-forward red 3 but Reyes is unlucky to scratch with his next shot. Qatar take a surprise lead but are still a long way from creating what would be the biggest upset in the history of the World Cup of Pool.

7.25pm: Efren Reyes defeats Bashar Hussain in the lag so Philippines break but Bustamante scratches with his first shot of the day.

7.15pm: There is not a seat available and we're packed three deep round the back of the arena and around the top balcony overlooking the table. Everyone is here to see the local favourites Efren Reyes and Francisco Bustamante. They face the underdog pairing of Bashar Hussain and Mohammed Ali Bi Ali from Qatar.

7.05pm: USA run out the rest of the rack to scrape into the next round. A relieved Rodney Morris screams for delight as the holders survive a huge scare in Manila.

6.58pm: Alex Borg's dry break comes at the worst possible team and with a shot on the one for Morris, Malta are in trouble.

6.53pm: The Americans sit stone-faced as Malta make it 7-7 for our first hill-hill match of the tournament. In a nice touch, the Maltese players shake hands before the start of the final rack. One team will be going through, one team wil be going home.

6.51pm: Van Boening leaves the 1-ball close to the pocket in the next and Malta look to capitalise again. They do and now only trail by one in another classic World Cup encounter between these two countries.

6.49pm: Morris comes up with a legal break when he needs it and America can see a last 16 place looming. But they will have to wait a bit longer as Morris leaves the 2-ball in a dangerous position. The Malteste pairing leap up, knowing they have to take this unexpected chance. They win their first rack in five but are still behind 5-7.

6.47pm: Drago is unsuccessful with a reverse bank shot into the bottom corner pocket and is left frustrated as the 1-ball sits over the pocket. Morris finishes off the rack as USA move to the hill and 7-4 in front.

6.46pm: America get a bit lucky in the next when Van Boening pots the 1-ball but in doing so the cue ball nudges into the 9-ball and it drops to give USA a 6-4 advantage, the first time either side has led by two.

6.39pm: America race through the ninth and move in front again. 5-4 to America.

6.35pm: The crowd are fully enjoying this match and a loud gasp is heard when Drago's 3-7 combination goes wrong and leaves the former hanging over the pocket. Van Boening makes up for his error in the last rack by downing the 9-ball and we are level once more. 4-4.

6.31pm: A dry break from Borg is not punished as Morris fails on the brown 7. He gets lucky as the 9-ball is between the 7-ball and the cue ball. Drago is forced to play a kick-shot and leaves the same ball out in the open. Van Boening banks it into the side pocket but loses position so Morris responds with a bank shot of his own into the other side pocket. It is exhibition stuff from the Americans. Well, it is until Van Boening misses the 9-ball. Borg rolls it down the rail into the bottom corner pocket and Drago lets out a scream of delight as Malta regain the lead for the first time since the opening rack.

6.25pm: For the second time, Morris does not have much luck with his break and comes up dry. Any mistake from either side is being punished and a psyched-up Drago pots the 9-ball to make it 3-3.

6.21pm: A fine break from Drago leaves Malta in a perfect position and him and Borg race through the rack. It all looks simple until Borg misses the 9-ball. Van Boening has to play safe but Drago leaves a simple chance for Morris, who converts. In such a short race, that error from Borg could prove to be critical. 3-2 USA.

6.18pm: That draws a mistake from the Maltese duo and America, are in action. However, Van Boening misses the pink 4 and leaves on a potential 4-9 combination. Seconds later Drago has pocketed the ball and brought the scores level at 2-2.

6.17pm: An excellent safety shot by Drago sees the cue ball tight behind the pink 4, although Van Boening does equally well to connect with the target 2-ball and to also make it safe.

6.15pm: An illegal break from Rodney Morris - as three balls were not pocketed or went past the head string - brings Malta back to the table. However, Drago's kick-shot attempt misses everything and USA have ball-in-hand. Morris sinks the 9-ball and America take the lead for the first time. A number of other teams are in the seats watching this, including Germany, Italy and India's Raj Hundal.

6.14pm: America capitalise on an error from Alex Borg and instantly draw level. With three of the four competitors regulars at the Mosconi Cup, this match could see the highest standard of pool yet in this competition.

6.11pm: Malta - Alex Borg and Tony Drago - are first to have a chance after the American side (consisting of Shane Van Boening and Rodney Morrirs) miss an attempt on the 1-ball. Drago, dubbed the fastest pool player in the world, and Borg, a former snooker professional, move 1-0 ahead in quick time.

6.08pm: The first match of the evening session sees Malta meet USA in a repeat of a first round World Cup match back in 2007. USA scraped a thriller 8-7 on that occasion and the large crowd would love to see a similar encounter.

6.05pm: Hello and welcome back to the SM City North Mall in Manila, Philippines. It's a packed crowd for what promises to be a superb evening of pool as defending champions USA followed by the local heroes Efren Reyes and Francisco Bustamante - the Philippines B team.
